Shehzad Poonawalla Resubmits His Resignation From the BJP, Citing Pressing Financial and Personal Circumstances, and Says He Plans to Move Into the Private Sector While Continuing to Support Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP’s Broader Vision.
NEW DELHI: BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla has resigned from the party, seeking to step down from his organisational responsibilities and primary membership. He submitted a fresh resignation letter to BJP national president Nitin Nabin on August 17, 2026.
Poonawalla had first offered his resignation on July 30, citing pressing financial and personal circumstances. The BJP had then asked him to reconsider the decision, and his resignation was not accepted at that time. He has now said that, after further consideration, he has decided to stand by his decision.
In his latest letter, Poonawalla said he intends to move into the private sector. He also expressed gratitude towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP president Nitin Nabin and other senior party leaders for the opportunities he received during his years in the organisation.
Poonawalla also made it clear that his departure from the party organisation does not amount to a rejection of the BJP's broader political vision. He said he would continue to support Prime Minister Modi and the BJP's work wherever possible.
His resignation comes after he had served as one of the BJP's prominent national spokespersons, frequently representing the party's position on political and national issues.
The immediate political significance of his resignation remains limited, as Poonawalla has not announced a move to another political party. His stated plan is to enter the private sector while continuing to support the BJP's broader vision.
Important: Poonawalla has submitted his resignation and asked the BJP leadership to accept it. This should not be reported as the BJP having formally accepted his resignation unless the party confirms that separately.
